Strategic Planning Guide for

Self-Managing Schools

by Paul Balnaves

This guide is a product of a series of ISCA sponsored research and professional development activities into school planning and change management in independent schools. The guide outlines the main concepts of strategic planning and draws on the experience of a number of independent schools as practical case studies. It aims to assist any self-managing school with implementing strategic planning.

The guide is a ‘how to’ book rather than a treatise, although the references provide opportunity for readers to follow up on the management theory. The guide does not recommend any one particular model of strategic planning, but rather provides material that can be drawn on by a wide range of schools of different sizes and types within their own management styles. (Last edition 1996)
